Friday Findings

by 123pizza on October 17, 2008

Today’s findings will be a bit different. Instead of sharing links I’ve found on the internet, I’m going to share some authors I have enjoyed reading lately.

Ellen Hopkins - I’ve read Crank and am in the process of reading Impulse.

Elizabeth Berg - I’ve read Talk Before Sleep: A Novel and Dream When You’re Feeling Blue: A Novel.

Gregory Maguire - I’ve read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Harper Fiction) and have started Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister: A Novel.

Scott Westerfeld - I’ve read Uglies (Boxed Set): Uglies, Pretties, Specials (Uglies) and have checked out Peeps but haven’t started it yet.

Stephanie Meyer - Technically, I haven’t read anything by her but am anticipating reading Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) as soon as it is my turn at the library. Right now there are quite a few people who are wanting to read it. I think I was second in line last time I checked. I have almost bought it several times but the fact that I had groceries to buy prevented me from purchasing it. Darn me for being all responsible.

Scott Westerfeld Trilogy - Pretties

by 123pizza on October 26, 2007

Pretties by Scott Westerfeld

Oh my goodness! Not since Harry Potter have I enjoyed a series this much. I read the first book Uglies (Uglies Trilogy, Book 1) and had to go buy Pretties so I could immediately start reading it. I am totally hooked, as a matter of fact, I am getting ready to purchase the last book Specials (Uglies Trilogy, Book 3) because I have to know what happens. I can’t wait for the library to get it in especially since they don’t even have Pretties yet. I will have to buy the book to finish off my set. Not bad since I will definitely be reading these books again and hopefully my kiddos will read them when they are older. I know hubby is interested since he is the one who showed me Uglies in the bookstore ages ago. I looked at it thought it looked good and put it back on the shelf…checked it out at the library several months later and never got around to reading it. Then I saw it at the store and since I had some money to spend thought why not and bought the book…several days later I bought the sequel and I am now going to be buying the third and last book.

These books are amazing. You follow Tally Youngblood’s life from the time right before she turns 16 and is ugly. The story is easy to follow yet captivating. I have to force myself to put the book down and go to bed then as soon as I wake up I am longing to pick the book back up so I can see what happens next. Actually I have a confession…I enjoy these books better than Harry Potter. There I said it. I liked reading these books better than I liked reading the Harry Potter books. Not that the story lines are anything alike because they aren’t. They aren’t anywhere close but for some reason I was able to picture what was happening easier in my head. This is a series of books that I will read and reread time and time again. Harry Potter was a season and so far I have no desire to reread them. Although, not everyone will agree with me and that is fine.

Seriously though, I recommend reading Uglies, Pretties and (heck even though I haven’t read it yet) Specials by Scott Westerfeld. They are that good. I’m even trying to picture these books as movies and wondering if I would go see them. I would at least go see the first one and probably watch the other two on DVD if I didn’t see them in the theater. (Because I’m not a movie person). I don’t know who I would cast but it wouldn’t be any mainstream actors. For some reason I think the story would be ruined if there were name brand actors in it. I enjoy seeing up and coming actors and these could be the movies that made them the next best thing. But that’s just my opinion, what do you think?

Books I’m Reading and Wanting to Read

by 123pizza on September 28, 2007

I am currently reading two books and working on more. The first is Scoop (The Occupational Hazards Series #1) by Rene Gutteridge. I’m about a 1/3 of the way through and have actually laughed a couple of times. That is a good thing because I tend to be too serious.

The second book is Hollywood Nobody by Lisa Samson. Hollywood arrived in the mail today and I was so excited I had to start reading it. I am loving it so far! Lisa Samson and this book will be on my feature author page in November so I’m happy to be reading it. Don’t worry, I’ll have a book review before then.

I am waiting for Woman’s Inhumanity to Woman by Phylis Chesler. A friend of mine is reading this book and kept talking about how excellent it is so her, another friend and I will be reading it together and then discussing it. It should be interesting. Our next book to read will be The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. That book will bring some interesting discussion. I have been wanting to read Mystique for several years. I tried reading it when my youngest was a baby but kept falling asleep due to the fact I had a baby and was getting no sleep. Now that kiddos are a little older my interest has been awakened. (Ha. Ha.)

Let’s see…I don’t see any other books in my immediate future. I do want to read Uglies (Uglies Trilogy, Book 1) at some point in time. I checked it out from the library a few weeks ago but didn’t get around to reading it.

Oh! I know what I want to read! Best Friends kiddo is reading the Dear America books. One of the books K has read is My America: Our Strange New Land, Elizabeth’s Jamestown Colony Diary, Book One (My America). K enjoyed it so much that I wanted to read it also. I love finding someone who loves to read as much as I do especially someone as young as K.

I am all about reading. I am starting to see my kiddos start to enjoy reading. They love reading the Bone graphic novels. So does R (Best Friends kiddo). When R is over at our house, it is not unusual to see them sitting around reading Bone. (This is of course after they have all gotten hurt or in trouble and have to settle down). Anyway, back to books and reading.

I love to read. If I do not have a book started and another planned I don’t know how to act. I start to get panicky and start looking for something to read. It’s like the world is falling apart. Books and reading are a part of me. Books are my passion. I don’t think I can go a day without reading…as a matter of fact, I will schedule it into my day if I have to. That is how important reading is to me.

I am always looking for new reading material so feel free to leave suggestions.
