Where Should the Tithe Go?

by 123pizza on November 17, 2008

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. (Malachi 3:10 NIV Translation)

What is the storehouse? What is the food? Is it literally food for God’s house or does it mean something else? What is God’s house, the building or the people?

If we are to give our tithe to the storehouse which is taken to mean the church, shouldn’t we be viewing the church as the people? Shouldn’t our tithe be going to help the people?

Of course, if we did that then where would we get the money to pay our pastors and staff? Where would we get the money to pay the expenses on the building? Where would we get the money to purchase the latest and greatest Bible teaching tools?

Most teach your tithe goes to the church and anything else is an offering and that can go anywhere you choose. Now, stay with me for a bit.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation.

35 And here’s why: I was hungry and you fed me,
I was thirsty and you gave me a drink,
I was homeless and you gave me a room,

36 I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit,
I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 “Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? 38 And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ 40 Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:34-40 The Message)

What if…our tithe was to go to the church (people) and our offering was to go to the church (building stuff I mentioned earlier)? How are we helping the least of these if our money is going to the church (building)?

I am one of those where it is difficult to give 10% of my income. It hurts us financially. I would tithe but there would be so much more I would want to do but didn’t have any extra left over.

Things such as:

  • supporting a child through Compassion
  • buying lots of shoes for those who need them
  • purchasing supplies for the homeless
  • making care packages for our military that is serving overseas away from their families
  • purchasing nice yarn to knit caps for cancer patients

That’s just a small list of the tings I think show the love of Christ in a practical way but financially am not able to do it. Especially if my tithe is going to the church (building) instead of the church (people).

Those are just my thoughts and I don’t have any answers.

I wonder though…how would it change Christianity if we gave to the church (people) instead of the church (building)?

Saturday I was looking over the Twitter comments when I happened upon this:

loswhit Hey tweets. Come join @tonysteward and I here… http://internet.lifechurch.tv/ 07:23 PM September 06, 2008 from web

LIfeChurch? I go to LifeChurch. I didn’t know they had an internet campus so I clicked on the link Los provided and found myself on the internet campus’s web page. I immediately started reading, clicking, and becoming excited. It looked pretty cool.

So Sunday morning I experienced the internet campus at LifeChurch. It was AWESOME! It was AMAZING! It was nothing like I expected.

I had watched the sermon videos online before and that was pretty much what I expected. Nope. This was not it. I actually experienced church. You:

  • show up
  • visit with others (there is a lobby chat room to chat before/after service)
  • have praise and worship (you choose between two different bands to listen to and the words are on the screen just as if you were there live)
  • take an offering (you can use paypal)
  • can raise your hand (a button comes up when the Pastor asks for people to raise their hands if they need prayer)
  • can get saved (at the salvation call the hand raise button comes back on). At the service I attended 17 people made the decision to follow Jesus.

This was real church people. There was interaction. It wasn’t just me sitting in front of my computer watching an online message, I was participating with others from all over. Also, you can’t just hop online and have church anytime you choose, there are scheduled services. You purposely sit in front of your computer and choose to go to church. How amazing!

I was blown away by my experience. God is using LifeChurch to tear away any misconceptions I have ever had about church. First, it was through the satellite/video teaching and now through their internet campus. Thank you Lord for choosing me for such a time as this.

My Church

by 123pizza on July 18, 2008

When I walked through the doors of church Sunday morning my eyes and mind went into overdrive. My eyes were busy taking the sights in while my mind was trying to process it all. My heart was leaping with excitement at all that I was seeing and thinking.

I love being in a place where everyone looks different. Different hairstyles, different clothes, different skin color…I love it all. We are all different yet we are there for one purpose — to praise and worship our Savior and God, Jesus Christ.

I want to sit back and observe everyone in their differences and in their sameness. I want to observe the praise and worship band as it interacts with the audience and the audience’s response in return.

I love the unity we can experience in church. Being with a mass of other believers is exhilarating and refreshing. I love that I am not on display. This church is big enough that I don’t feel as though everyone is watching me. This church is freeing but not in a way that I’m not getting the Word.

I feel as though I belong to this church even though I haven’t met anyone.
