Magic cards

Magic cards

Last weekend we visited Vintage Stock. I love browsing through the graphic novels. The kids love the video games. By my graphic novels were tubs of Magic: The Gathering cards. I was reminded of a past friend that would have everyone over to play. I didn’t ever grasp the concept of the rules so I sat and watched for a few hours before I grabbed a book off his shelf to read.

I am the dork that appreciates the fun things but doesn’t quite grasp the rules of the game. I was like that with Dungeons and Dragons too (the paper one). I could appreciate the fun but didn’t quite get it so I would sit with my friends and have fun while watching/listening to them play. After a bit I would grab a book to read in the corner still listening to fun being had. My role: the dork with the nerd and geek friends. I’m cool with it. It works. :-)

It’s unfortunate that you didn’t get into playing D&D. When I played – and I was typically Dungeon Master, so I ran the show – the point of my games was not rules, it was imagination. I remember several episodes where we didn’t roll any dice or consult any rulebooks for hours at a time. It was purely me making something up (based on a crapload of work I’d done already), and the players responding to it. That, IMO, is how the game should be played, with rules only consulted as needed.

I was told I didn’t take it serious enough. I’d still like to play sometime. Who knows. Maybe someday. :-)
