Hubby and I are avid readers and have read to our children since they were born. So imagine our surprise when N announces he hates reading. Ever since then it has been my mission to find the book that will hook him and make him a life-long reader.
This evening while we were at our local Hastings, N was walking with me as I was browsing the books. He saw a few that caught his attention and asked if I would get them. I did better. I took pictures of them so I could look them up in our library’s online card catalog.
I showed them to Hubby and he noticed that most of them were horror/thrillers and told N he couldn’t read them. That upset N but we explained that they were adult books for a reason and would probably be too scary for him. He insisted that he would be fine reading them and Hubby told him if he wanted a horror type book then he should read Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Hubby also suggested N read The Graveyard Book
also by Neil Gaiman. (Neil Gaiman is one of Hubby’s favorite authors.)
We walked around some more and N would look at more books and get excited about reading them. Unfortunately, only a couple of them are at our library so I’m going to look into inter-library loan. It’s not often that N gets excited about books and I want him to have access to the ones that caught his attention.
Also, when we got home Hubby and I went through the boxes of books in the garage for books that might interest N since we now had an idea of the kinds of books he might want to read (sci-fi and fantasy, Hubby’s genre). We brought in lots of books (that we have no room for which is why they were still in boxes in the garage) so N could look through and see if he wanted to read them.
I thought about taking a picture of the piles of books but then chickened out. Imagine two bookcases messily piled with books that have no more room on them and piles of books setting in front of them. Yep. That’s what it looks like. I think we are going to go through the kiddos books and get rid of some they have outgrown so we can make room for more books. (I’m pretty sure I mentioned Hubby and I are avid readers.)
Anyway, enough about the lack of room I have for our many books. What I want to know is what do your boys like to read? How did you instill the love of reading in them? I mean the love of reading where they pick a book up on their own and read it. Not the love of reading where they love for you to read to them. What did you do?
