Adventures in Gardening

The following is an email I sent this evening to my friend, The Master Gardener Guru.

You’d be so proud of me! I planted ground cover! Our house has several bed areas and I redug them, got out as much grass as I could and started planting.

In the area around the mailbox I planted…well, I don’t know because I threw the seed packets away. One was lower to the ground and the other would grow to be about 12″ high. I placed the taller plants around the fence post and the shorter plants will hopefully fill the rest of the area and act as a ground cover. (I’m all about low maintenance.)

The area around the tree I planted six pint size ground cover (Althoum Sedum) and I also planted Echinacea.

I have another area by the corner of our driveway where I tried to dig up the plant but the root goes too deep so I sprayed Round-up on it. I’m waiting for it to die so I can finish cleaning it out. When I can I will be planting hollyhock in the middle, then shasta daisy, coreopsis, Aubrieta Whitewell gem (as a ground cover).

I’ve also planted vegetable and herb containers. One long container has basil, parsley, oregano, and fennel. Another long container has various lettuces. My big, deep container has cucumbers and two regular size round containers has garden beans.

I’ve started all from seeds so I don’t know how it will turn out but it will be a fun experiment and Youngest is having fun helping me plant and water.

What’s cool is most of the containers I already had. I bought the long one and I owned the big, deep one but the rest were already here.

Like I said, I don’t know if anything will actually grow but I’m having fun!
