Homemade Popcorn

Last Wednesday I was at R’s house when she started making popcorn. No big deal except she was cooking it on the stove in a pan. No microwave and no special popcorn maker. Just a pan, lid, coconut oil, and popcorn kernels.

I wasn’t really paying attention to what she was doing but I seem to recall her moving the pan around and after a bit dumping it in a huge bowl. It also didn’t seem to take her very long and the popcorn tasted great.

Soooooo, the other day I was grocery shopping and picked up a package of popcorn kernels. I was going to try this at home. If I succeed, I could save us lots of money.

My first attempt was somewhat successful. The popcorn popped like it was supposed to and tasted great. It also popped up so much that the lid was coming off the pan and popped all over the stove. As it popped onto to the stove some it fell on the hot burner and started burning (I have an electric stove). Oh and the house filled up smoke. But the popcorn that didn’t fall onto the stove and get burned was excellent!

We loved it! I will definitely try this again. It was fun seeing the kids’ faces as the popcorn was popping. I don’t think they have ever seen popcorn made any other way except for the microwave.

Here’s to many more times making popcorn at home and learning to do it right!

Do you remember Jiffy Pop? It came in an aluminum, pan-looking thing, and ya moved it back and forth on the stove. THAT was some good popcorn :-) .
