Playing with GIMP

by 123pizza on April 14, 2008

This weekend I got out my trusty camera and actually took some pictures. This is amazing because I’ve had the camera for about 2 1/2 years and hardly touch it. My husband takes the pictures because I always had to take the pictures at our family gatherings for my mom and I suck. Plus, my mother-in-law is always running around with her camera and it gets quite annoying after awhile so I don’t mess with the camera.

That has started to change since I’ve been reading Pioneer Woman’s blog and seeing the amazing things she does with her photographs. The only problem is she uses Photoshop. Several problems actually…1. Photoshop only works on Windows (I use Linux) and 2. Photoshop costs lots of money. So what am I to do? “Use Gimp,” my computer saavy hubby says. Ok.

So I started playing around with Gimp trying to recreate what I was learning from Pioneer Woman. It has been difficult but not too bad. I have realized I’m going to need a book of some kind so after doing some research I decided on Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional (Beginning from Novice to Professional) by Akkana Peck. While I haven’t actually seen the book, I did watch a tutorial she made available on her website that was immensely helpful so I ordered her book.

The best photo I have enhanced is of Best Friend’s son at his soccer game this weekend. I had the camera zoomed on his face and kept clicking away while he was standing close by. I’m not going to show it because that would be invading on their privacy and I’m too good of a friend to do that to them. That and once the girls see how handsome Best Friend’s son is they will be googling for him trying to find out his number and address and stalking him trying to get him to go out with them and I love Best Friend too much to do that to her and her son. So instead I will show you a photo of our Redbud in our front yard.

I still have a lot to learn but that’s what I came up with without having clue what I did. Not too bad for being clueless. By the way, Gimp stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program and it’s free. FREE! You can download it here. You can use it whether you run Windows, Linux, or Mac.
